Brittney Griner had already put on a pretty dominating show for the home crowd. Then she decided to pull up the curtain and unveil the entire package. Griner brought the house down with an emphatic second-half dunk, then excitedly flashed several other facets of her game in sparking the No. 7 Baylor Lady Bears to an 81-52 romp over Incarnate Word in exhibition play before 6,262 fans at the Ferrell Center Saturday night. Griner finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds, five blocked shots and one extremely crowd-pleasing slam.

As dominant as the No. 7 Baylor Lady Bears were at times in their 97-43 romp over St. Edward’s in the exhibition opener Tuesday, the frightening truth for their upcoming opponents is this: They can still be better. Baylor coach Kim Mulkey was pleased with her team’s hustle against St. Edward’s, but still kept a running tally of the ways they needed to improve. For one, she understands that sanding off the rough edges of BU’s five freshmen is far from an overnight process.

Baylor coach Kim Mulkey knows her Lady Bears are far from a finished product, but she still admired the way they finished Tuesday night. The seventh-ranked Lady Bears shot a sizzling 70 percent from the floor in the second half and tightened up the defensive screws in running away with a 97-43 win over St. Edward’s in the exhibition opener before an eager crowd of 6,095 at the Ferrell Center. “I thought our defense was better in the second half,” said Mulkey, whose team held the Hilltoppers to just 15 points after the break. “I thought we gave up too many points in the first half. It was good to see the crowd we had here on a Tuesday night — football season, an exhibition game, and we have over 6,000 fans here. That was very special.”

If Baylor women’s coach Kim Mulkey had her druthers, the officials wouldn’t even turn on the scoreboard for tonight’s exhibition opener. Mulkey is treating this game against St. Edward’s as more of a glorified practice, a chance to continue to educate her young pupils, including her five freshmen. “You always look forward to your first exhibition or your first game, but I really think they understand we have a lot to learn,” Mulkey said. “We haven’t really had much time to think about it. Back in the dorm or back in the apartment, they may count days to when they play, but when we’re over here, we don’t even talk about it. It’s work, work and more work. That’s the approach we’re going to take this week.”

The Baylor women’s basketball team may have plenty of new faces, but they are still expected to do well by the nation’s media. Baylor came in at No. 7 in the Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll, the school’s second-highest preseason ranking ever. The Lady Bears were No. 6 in 2005-06, the year after winning the NCAA title. Defending national champion Connecticut was a unanimous selection as the No. 1 team, followed by Stanford, Ohio State, Notre Dame, North Carolina and Duke in spots 2-6. Baylor was the top Big 12 team in the poll; others included No. 12 Texas, No. 13 Oklahoma and No. 20 Kansas.

When the elevator is going up — way up — it’s wise to enter on the ground floor. It’s sage advice for not only skyscraper visitors but also any would-be Baylor women’s basketball fans out there, those hoops holdouts trying to determine whether they should shell out the money for that season ticket package or not. Just buy ‘em, jack. Trust me. You’re going to want to be there for every second of Brittney Griner’s collegiate career.

Excitement is in the air as basketball season looms in Waco. Anyone who needs any proof of that needs to only ask any of the record crowd of 1,150 that turned out Tuesday for the 13th annual Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce Tip-off Luncheon at the Ferrell Center. Those in attendance were treated to a discussion between Baylor women’s coach Kim Mulkey and assistant Leon Barmore, both of whom were part of three national championship teams at Louisiana Tech and are members of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

There’s no doubt the Baylor women’s basketball team has plenty of talent, and there’s a legitimate buzz about what it could achieve in the 2009-10 season. On Friday night, a large crowd watched as eight returning letterwinners and six new Lady Bears went through their first practice as the Ferrell Center. “We had a great first practice,” Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. “I bet there were a thousand people there.”
