MILLER’S THE MAN Texas A&M’s Von Miller seems to be everywhere. Through 10 games, the defensive end/linebacker leads the nation with 15.5 sacks for 106 yards, and has a shot to break the school record of 20 sacks set by Jacob Green in 1976. He could become A&M’s first first-team All-America defensive player since cornerback Jason Webster in 1999. CRAWFORD DUO

Freshman quarterback Nick Florence experienced the thrill of silencing a big crowd when Baylor upset Missouri two weeks ago in Columbia. He’d love to recapture that moment. With their bowl hopes on the line, the Bears will try to knock off Texas A&M at Kyle Field for the first time in 25 years at 2:30 p.m. today in College Station.

Aggie QB Johnson flying past Big 12 defenses

Jerrod Johnson believes he can fly. When the Texas A&M junior quarterback heaves a tight-spiraling football into the stratosphere, it’s hard to dispute that he can. While the Aggies have proven collectively erratic over the course of the season, that diagnosis is no indictment of Johnson, who has been as steady as the sunrise. In his second full season as A&M’s starter, Johnson leads the Big 12 in total offense, averaging 299.7 yards per game, and is tied with Oklahoma’s Landry Jones for the league lead in touchdown passes with 22.

When a 300-pound man wearing camouflage bangs at your door before daylight, you either call 9-1-1 or approach with caution. After wiping the sleep from his eyes, Baylor offensive tackle Danny Watkins knew just who it was. Standing at the door was center J.D. Walton, who was taking Watkins dove hunting.

The Baylor-Texas A&M game won’t have any impact on the Big 12 race and is way under the radar on the national picture. But it means everything to the teams involved. Both the Bears and Aggies are essentially looking at a must-win situation to become bowl eligible. The Bears must win their last two games against A&M and Texas Tech, while the Aggies need to split their final two games against Baylor and No. 3 Texas.

Baylor vs. Texas A&M: How they match up

HOW THEY MATCH UP Baylor’s offense vs. Texas A&M’s defense Except for their opening drive, the Bears had trouble putting together any kind of offensive consistency against Texas’ defense last week. Their only two touchdowns came in the fourth quarter when the game was out of hand. It should be a much different story against the Aggies. Simply put, A&M’s defense has been terrible. In Big 12 play, the Aggies are giving up a whopping 465.5 yards and 39.7 points per game, easily the worst in the league. Last week, A&M allowed 640 yards in a 65-10 loss at Oklahoma. The Bears are averaging just 14.7 points in the Big 12, but showed their potential by scoring 40 two weeks ago against Missouri.

When opportunity knocked, Baylor’s Terrance Williams and Dary Stone made sure they were at the door waiting. Thrust into action by varying circumstances, Stone and Williams have provided a kick-start to the Bears’ kicking game. When duty called, they answered the call. Williams, a redshirt freshman receiver from W.T. White High School in Dallas, impressed the BU coaching staff in the spring with his pass-catching exploits. But he has struggled to touch the field behind a Bear receiving rotation that includes the likes of Kendall Wright, David Gettis and Ernest Smith.

With campuses sitting only 80 miles apart, Baylor would be motivated to play century-old rival Texas A&M in anything — rugby, pingpong, bowling. But when you have a football game with bowl implications, the ante skyrockets. Both the Bears and Aggies desperately need to win in their 106th meeting at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in College Station.

Minutes after their 47-14 loss to Texas, the Baylor football players were ready to forget that train wreck ever happened. In their minds, the Bears had already moved on to more pressing matters. Even with their most vital player — quarterback Robert Griffin — and several others out with injuries, the Bears never stopped believing they could achieve their dream of becoming bowl eligible.

There’s no question Austin is sprawling, but it looked like the city limits had spread all the way to Floyd Casey Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Playing before a crowd of 44,372 saturated by Texas fans, the No. 2 Longhorns made themselves at home and ran Baylor out of its own stadium. With Colt McCoy pushing the offense and Texas’ defense smothering the Bears, the Longhorns looked like a team on a mission to get to the BCS championship game.

Texas coach Mack Brown continued to dominate Baylor with a 47-14 thrashing Saturday at Floyd Casey Stadium. Brown improved to 12-0 against the Bears since taking over at Texas in 1998. The Bears have allowed at least 40 points to the Longhorns in 10 of the last 11 games. It didn’t hurt that the majority of the 44,372 fans were dressed in burnt orange and white.

Baylor heard all the stories about Texas’ vaunted defense. The Bears read their off-the-charts statistics, and memorized the numbers of the Longhorns’ defenders. They certainly lived up to their billing as they shut down the Bears in the Longhorns’ 47-14 blowout win Saturday at Floyd Casey Stadium.

BROWNWOOD, Texas — Lawrence Elkins’ house sits near the shore of Lake Brownwood in a quiet neighborhood surrounded by live oaks. There’s nothing flashy about the house, but inside the den you get the idea why the former Baylor star was one of the most groundbreaking receivers in the history of college football in the early 1960s. “This is the ‘I love me’ room,” Elkins laughs.

After five years on campus, Baylor seniors Joe Pawelek and Jordan Lake can hardly believe they’ll be playing their last game at Floyd Casey Stadium today. The two all-Big 12 defenders will be among 20 Baylor seniors who hope to overcome overwhelming odds and upset No. 2 Texas at 11 a.m. “It’s kind of crazy to think this is my last game at Floyd Casey,” Pawelek said. “You just sit back and think, ‘Wow, this goes by fast.’ I’ve definitely had a lot of great memories here. More than anything, it’s not a certain game or a certain play, it’s just being with the guys and all the relationships you’ve built over the last four or five years here.”

Sgt. Mark Todd, the Fort Hood Killeen officer officials now say successfully disarmed Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan in a shooting rampage that left 13 dead and 30 others injured, has been invited to perform the pre-game coin toss on the field. Sgt. Kimberly Munley, the police officer who was shot during a face-off against Hasan, remains hospitalized from her injuries.

Baylor’s offense vs. Texas’ defense Baylor quarterback Nick Florence enjoyed a breakout game last week against Missouri as he hit 32 of 43 passes for 427 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-32 upset win. But he hasn’t seen a defense like the Longhorns will put on the field. It’s a national championship caliber defense that leads the country by allowing just 230.8 total yards and 55.3 rushing yards per game. Baylor ranks last in league games with just 46 yards rushing per game. Texas also leads the Big 12 by allowing 175.4 passing yards per game and nine touchdowns.

Baylor shocked the Big 12 when it traveled to Columbia and beat Missouri last weekend. After losing quarterback Robert Griffin for the season and dropping the first four conference games, the Bears desperately needed something good to happen to keep from plunging into a deep black hole.
Baylor was the talk of the Big 12 after its out-of-left-field upset of Missouri last weekend. If the Bears beat No. 2 Texas, they’ll be the talk of the nation. The Bears haven’t beaten the Longhorns since 1997, the last year John Mackovic coached the team. Texas coach Mack Brown is a perfect 11-0 against the Bears since 1998, and isn’t likely to overlook them Saturday at Floyd Casey Stadium since the unbeaten Longhorns might need to run the table to reach the BCS championship game.
