The Baylor equestrian team rode past Miami (Ohio), 15-1, and TCU, 8-7, to win its season-opening Willis Invitational for the second straight year. A steady rainfall forced the event to move indoors, but the change didn’t seem to bog down Baylor. The Bears scored a 3-1 win over Miami in equitation over fences and swept the reining portion of the competition. Baylor built a 6-2 lead over TCU in the English portion of its match against the Horned Frogs, then hung on despite TCU winning five points in Western.

Nicole Brown, a senior equestrian rider, has been named to the Chick Fil-A Community of Champions, an honor that recognizes academic success and sportsmanship away from athletics. One student-athlete from each Big 12 school was designated with the honor, and Brown was Baylor’s representative. Brown, a pre-med major, recently capped off her four-year career by leading the Baylor equestrian team to a best-ever fourth-place finish in Hunter Seat at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships. She holds program records for most Hunter Seat wins (60) and most wins in Equitation over Fences (40).

If so, you’d probably have some appreciation for the construction project put forth by Ellen White, who built a nationally recognized equestrian program from the ground up. And she did it in just four short years.

You can’t have nerves.
The Baylor equestrian team took over the No. 1 spot in this week’s intercollegiate poll for the first time in the program’s four-year history. It actually marks only the third time a Baylor team has ever been ranked No. 1 in a national poll — the Lady Bear basketball team was voted No. 1 in the final coaches’ poll in 2005 after winning the national title, and the Baylor men’s tennis team was ranked No. 1 throughout most of 2004 and ’05. “Did I think this was possible? Yes,” Baylor equestrian coach Ellen White said. “Our facilities are great, Baylor supports us ... they get us anything we need.”
