The Baylor baseball team won’t have to stray far from Baylor Ballpark during the 2010 season. The Bears will play their first 18 games at home, and play only two nonconference games away from Waco in all — at Texas State April 21 and at TCU April 27.
The Baylor baseball team’s scrimmage with Texas that was rained out last Sunday has been rescheduled for Oct. 25 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin. The teams will play a 14-inning affair starting at 1 p.m. While the game will not count toward the teams’ 2010 win-loss record, it does count against the 56-game limit for the 2010 schedule. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is free, though donations will be taken to support the Baylor Diamond Girls. Burgers on the Berm will feature an intrasquad scrimmage and allow fans to meet the players.

The quarterback on Baylor’s 1980 Southwest Championship football team and one of the baseball program’s most heralded stars highlight the newest class of inductees to the Baylor Athletic Hall of Fame, which was announced Monday. Jay Jeffrey, who was the SWC’s Newcomer of the Year as a junior in 1980, and Jason Jennings, the first consensus national player of the year in Division I baseball history, lead a class that also includes Charles Benson and Frank Ditta (football), Billy Hollis (men’s track and field) and Stacey Smith (women’s track and field). In addition, former Baylor basketball star Dr. Gerald D. Cobb will join the Hall of Fame’s Wall of Honor. A teammate of Benson and Ditta, Jeffrey earned a pair of letters in football and two more in baseball. In 1981, he became only the fifth BU quarterback to throw for more than 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons, finishing with 1,643 yards and nine touchdown passes that year. He still holds the Baylor school record for longest run from scrimmage, on an 83-yard TD scamper versus Lamar in 1980.

Kendal Volz has endured nervous baseball-related moments before. As recently as May, the NCAA tournament selection committee waited until the final bracket to reveal the inclusion of Volz and his Baylor teammates. So coming down to deadline day to sign a pro contract? That was no sweat. Volz signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox Monday, just hours before the deadline for Major League clubs to sign their June draft picks.

Sutton was called up from Triple-A Louisville, where he was hitting .254 with five homers and 19 RBIs in 38 games this season. In April, the Reds acquired Sutton from the Houston Astros organization, which drafted him in the 15th round out of Baylor in 2004.
The hoopla of the major league draft may be over, but the show goes on for many of the ballplayers selected. And it’s a show called “Deal or No Deal.” For the Baylor players selected in last week’s draft, it’s still a case of “no deal,” as none of the seven BU draftees had signed as of Friday.

When March Madness rolls around, we all fill out our NCAA tournament brackets and try to outsmart everybody in our office by picking the biggest upsets. Most of the shockers are in the first two rounds. But once you get to the Elite Eight of the men’s basketball tournament, the big dogs usually rise to the top. Was anybody surprised North Carolina and Kansas won national titles the last two years? I’m glad nobody fills out an NCAA baseball tournament bracket. Trying to pick a winner would be pure foolishness.
