COLUMBIA, Mo. — After watching Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert put together a near-perfect first half, Baylor’s defense could have simply thrown up its hands in frustration Saturday afternoon. Instead, the Bears spent the second half throwing Gabbert to the turf. Collecting four sacks, the Bears pressured Gabbert into a bad second half as the Bears rallied for a 40-32 win at Faurot Field.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Desperate for its first Big 12 win, Baylor went to the Show Me State and showed the Missouri Tigers the door. With freshman Nick Florence passing for a school-record 427 yards and three touchdowns, the Bears rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to pull off a stunning 40-32 win Saturday afternoon. A Faurot Field crowd of 65,298 fell dead silent after watching Baylor’s first Big 12 road win since a 34-31 triple-overtime thriller over Colorado in Boulder in 2006.

Baylor coach Art Briles has emphasized starting and finishing Big 12 games with a flourish. But for the Bears’ offense, finding production any time would be a step in the right direction. After scoring just three offensive touchdowns in the first four Big 12 games, the Bears are looking for a breakout performance against Missouri at 1 p.m. today at Faurot Field in Columbia, Mo.

Baylor vs. Missouri: How they match up

HOW THEY MATCH UP Baylor’s offense vs. Missouri’s defense The Baylor offense has a big problem: Scoring. Despite moving into the red zone three times in the fourth quarter in last week’s 20-10 loss to Nebraska, the Bears failed to come away with a point. But at least the Bears threatened to score, which is something they hadn’t done much in previous games. Baylor is still looking for an offensive scheme that will best fit freshman quarterback Nick Florence’s talents. While Missouri’s defense has allowed 29.5 points per game in Big 12 play, it still has some big playmakers like linebacker Sean Weatherspoon.

It’s 2-52 and counting. That’s a statistic Baylor hates, but it’s the team’s record in Big 12 road games since the league began in 1996. Three of those losses were against Missouri in Columbia, including 42-24 losses in 1997 and 2001, and a 31-16 decision in 2005. Baylor hasn’t won a Big 12 road game since a 34-31 triple-overtime thriller over Colorado in 2006, and would need a major about-face Saturday.

If Danario Alexander never sees the inside of a hospital room again, it’ll be too soon. Since arriving in Columbia in the fall of 2006, the Missouri senior wide receiver has endured four surgeries. That includes three separate procedures on his left knee since the autumn of 2007. Through all the missed games and the countless hours of rehabilitation, Alexander has learned patience and perseverance. He has admittedly matured as both a player and a person.

When Clifton Odom, Chris Francis, Matt Singletary and Elliot Coffey arrived at Baylor two years ago, they quickly realized they shared something unique. All four of their fathers played in the NFL. Suddenly these young defensive players had something to share besides getting accustomed to the day to day grind of college football. “We realized we had a bond, and that was cool,” Odom said. “Being the son of a pro athlete isn’t something we’ve talked about a lot, but I remember sharing some stories when we first got here. It’s kind of surreal watching films of your dad play football.”

Baylor’s defenders would like nothing more than to bottle the momentum they captured in the second half against Nebraska, and maybe spike the Gatorade coolers with it this weekend. But, in truth, they know better. The Bears recognize that it wasn’t any magic elixir that led to their feisty, turnover-creating effort versus the Huskers. Rather, it was just 11 guys fulfilling their own responsibilities. “The whole second half, it looked good, but all we really did was do our jobs,” senior defensive tackle Jason Lamb said. “That’s what happens when everyone is on the same page, doing what they’re supposed to do. So regarding trying to carry it over to the next week, we’re just going to go out there and do our jobs, a pretty simple thing.

Baylor coach Art Briles would like to bottle up the defensive effort his team gave against Nebraska and take it on the road to Missouri Saturday. The Bears are going to need it. After struggling with an ankle injury for several weeks, Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert looked more like his old self last weekend as he threw for two touchdowns in a 36-17 win over Colorado in Boulder.

After getting smothered in its first three Big 12 games, Baylor desperately needed to show it had a pulse. Just give the fans a clue that they’re still breathing. Show them there’s something they can build on as they head into the last month of the season. While the Bears weren’t throwing a party after their 20-10 loss to Nebraska on Saturday at Floyd Casey Stadium, they at least showed there was some hope.

Looking up at the sea of red at Floyd Casey Stadium, the Baylor players could have sworn they were in Lincoln. The Nebraska Cornhuskers looked so at home for the first 30 minutes Saturday afternoon that they could have set up easy chairs on the 50. But after Baylor delivered a great second-half defensive performance, the Cornhuskers weren’t feeling so comfortable.

Baylor has intercepted only nine passes in eight games, but has made them count. The Bears have returned three interceptions for scores, including Clifton Odom’s 45-yarder in the third quarter for their only touchdown in Saturday’s 20-10 loss to Nebraska at Floyd Casey Stadium. It was the biggest play of the day for the Bears.

Shame on you, Baylor fans. Oh sure, you could make excuses and claim that the football team hasn’t given you anything to cheer about this season, and for the most part, you’d be right. For two quarters Saturday, certainly nothing unfolded on the field that would have raised your blood pressure — at least not in a good way. But in the second half of their 20-10 loss to Nebraska, the Bears turned in an inspired effort, particularly on defense. They made a respectable bid at upsetting a Husker team that many predicted would win the Big 12 North at the start of the season.

Only a year ago, Chance Casey and Mike Hicks were offensive playmakers scoring loads of touchdowns for their high school teams. Now, they’re freshmen in Baylor’s secondary trying to outwit some of the best quarterbacks in the country. Maybe they should be scared, intimidated and looking for a place to hide. But with injuries ambushing Baylor’s secondary, these two teenagers have jumped in and played with the big boys.

Ndamukong Suh has heard it all. Over the years, he’s heard his name massacred in myriad ways, with all manner of mispronunciations. “I’ve heard it a million ways,” Suh said with a hearty laugh. “Usually, people just call me ‘Suh’ or ‘Big Suh.’ ” For the record, the Nebraska senior all-everything defensive tackle’s name is pronounced En-dom-ah-ken Soo.
