Sulak’s Cafe in West closes

The iconic Sulak’s Cafe in downtown West has closed, but the owner of the building said he thinks someone will buy or lease it very soon and it could serve food again.

Sulak’s Cafe had operated continuously since 1923, except for a three-year closing from 2003-06.

Jerry Mazanec bought the place in 2006, operated the restaurant for a couple of years, then signed a lease with another group that wanted to run an eatery. It is that group that called it quits earlier this month.

“With West being named a 'Main Street City’ a little more than a year ago, I do not expect the building to stay vacant long,” said Mazanec, 47, who is semi-retired and is now selling real estate in the Texas Hill Country.

He is offering the building, including its fixtures and a mahogany bar, for sale or lease.
